Art Therapy is fast becoming a popular and innovative therapy. Art therapy is a unique balance between art and therapy, it is not about art as we know it. It is the use of different art materials through which a client can express and work through issues, problems and concerns that they have brought to therapy. For many clients it is easier to use a non-verbal form of communication to make sense of their own experiences.
The basis of this therapy is not about the art produced its about the process of creating it. It involves the breaking down of old structures and beliefs in order to make way for new ways of seeing or being to emerge. The presence of the art in this therapy is what makes it unique, as it acts like a third person in the room. The art acts as a bridge between the client and the therapist. Paradoxically the art serves both to reduce self consciousness and to enhance self reflection, as it stands alone.
