Decoding food labels

May 15, 2017 By kunara-admin Leave a Comment

Food labels can be a tricky business. When you’re doing your best to eat clean foods free of synthetic chemicals, trying to work out if a product is healthy can take some serious decoding. It may also be a challenge for those with gluten or dairy intolerances to find healthy alternatives. A few quick tips can make choosing the best products for you a lot simpler.

Read the ingredients.

Checking the ingredients is a great place to start. Ingredients are listed in order from the highest concentration to least in a product; so, if the very first ingredient is sugar, that may be your first warning sign that it’s loaded with added sugar.

Check the nutrition panel.

Nutrition panels are a great way to assess the amount of fat, sugar, protein and other nutrients. Comparing the ‘per 100g’ column among products is a useful way to check for healthier alternatives. High amounts of sugar, sodium and saturated fat can be indications that it may not be the healthiest choice.

Gluten free, dairy free and other dietary labels

Following a dietary requirement can be hard enough without trying to decode product labelling.Kunara are proud of the large range of wholesome foods, particularly when it comes to certain dietary requirements, such as gluten and dairy free. Do ensure you’re eating treats in moderation (even if the label states gluten or dairy free!) and include plenty of wholefoods in your day.
