You may like to consider the following ideas to reduce your food wastage and rubbish production at home:
- Plan your meals and the food you buy accordingly- that way, you are less likely to purchase food that you don’t need and will be subsequently wasted.
- Line the base and top of your fruit and vegetable crisper with a little scotch paper towel- much produce spoilage is attributed to moisture, which the scotch paper towel can help to absorb.
- Pack leftover food immediately into containers to freeze or save for tomorrow’s food- this reduces the likelihood that your leftovers will sit forgotten in your fridge.
- Compost food scraps and appropriate food waste.
- Try to buy food in bulk and subsequently divide into your own reusable smaller containers- individually packaged smaller portions use up more packaging materials.
- If your asparagus or celery becomes limp, cut the ends off and stand in a jar of cold water to revive.
- Brush avocado or cut fruit with a little lemon juice to delay browning.
- Store green leafy vegetables in an airtight bag or container in your vegetable crisper.
- Make a vegetable stock from fresh leftover vegetable peels and scraps.
- Store fresh herbs in a jar with a little water and cover with plastic to retain freshness.
- Store mushrooms and zucchini in a brown paper bag within your vegetable crisper- they will ‘sweat’ in plastic.
- Avoid leaving cut vegetables outside of the fridge for more than two hours, as they will begin to spoil.

These are very helpful ideas. I’m trying to teach my kids how important it is to reduce the food waste and the waste we produce at all. We are trying to compost some of our scraps in a small container, sometimes we make vegetable stock, sauces and remake dishes. The love “inventing” new dishes and are glad every time when we start cleaning the fridge. Your suggestions are great and I’m trying some I haven’t done yet. Thank you for this post!
